Fibroblasts can acquire an activated phenotype, which is associated with an increased proliferative activity and enhanced secretion of ECM proteins such as type I collagen and tenascin C, and also fibronectin that contains the extra domain a (EDA-fibronectin) and SPARC (secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine).
PDGF induces the proliferation of fibroblasts, but does not induce the acquisition of an activated phenotype that is associated with excessive ECM deposition.
FGF2 was originally identified as a 'basic fibroblast growth factor', which stimulates the proliferation of 3T3 fibroblasts but not the expression of -smooth-muscle actin.
