Fibroblasts can acquire an activated phenotype, which is associated with an increased proliferative activity and enhanced secretion of ECM proteins such as type I collagen and tenascin C, and also fibronectin that contains the extra domain a (EDA-fibronectin) and SPARC (secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine). Phenotypically, activated fibroblasts are often characterized as expressing -smooth-muscle actin. Numerous growth factors such as transforming growth factor- (TGF), chemokines such as monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP1), and ECM-degrading proteases have been shown to mediate the activation of fibroblasts.
