Fibroblasts synthesize many of the constituents of the fibrillar ECM such as type I (genes COL1A1, COL1A2), type III (COL3A1) and type V collagen (COL5A1, COL5A2, COL5A3), and fibronectin.
They also contribute to the formation of basement membranes by secreting type IV collagen (COL4A1, COL4A2, COL4A3, COL4A4, COL4A5, COL4A6) and laminin.
